Don't let your model aircraft be redefined as a DRONE!
These bumper stickers were created so that responsible modelers can show opposition to their classic model aircraft being redefined as "drones".
Consider how the word "drone" has been used in the last several years.
Controversial "drone" strikes in foreign lands. "Drone" surveillance both abroad
and domestic. Pesky "drones" interfering with law enforcement
and firefighting efforts. "Drones" being flown and crash landed
on the White House lawn for crying out loud! Then there are the few foolish, irresponsible operators
of new types of model aircraft such as quad- and multi-copters, who
choose to engage in risky flights such as these, over populated areas, or public events.
The word "Drone" has undeniably gained a negative connotation.
True, there have been times in the past when the word "drone" was used
to generically refer to unmanned remotely controlled aircraft, however
the negative connotation that now accompanies it should concern all
modelers who hope to enjoy unfettered modelling activities in the
future.
Sadly, in recent years, the FAA and the popular media have begun in
earnest to redefine all model aircraft as "drones", regardless of the type or how they are operated. The FAA rules requiring model aircraft
operators to register are laced with reference after reference to
"Drones", but very few, if any, mention of model aircraft. This is
in spite of the 2012 FAA Modernization Act, which prohibited the FAA
from enacting any rules restricting model aircraft use. The legislature has continued to open the door to more restrictions and greater control over our responsible operation of model aircraft.
Please contact your elected
representatives, the Academy of Model Aeronautics
(AMA), and the FAA to express your concern over this
re-defining of model aircraft as "Drones".
